The Fano Factor is a measure of the variance of the probability distribution of Fano noise, named after Ugo Fano, an Italian-American physicist. The Fano factor is used in particle detection and in neuroscience to describe variability in complex multidimensional data. We found that in trading, the Fano factor can be used as a signal-to-noise ratio, as well as to indicate the strength of the price movement (i.e., the price movement is greater than predicted by purely statistical indicators). Like the standard deviation, the Fano factor values are relative, not oscillatory or absolute.

Trading strategy (see screenshots below):

  • Enter in the direction of the price movement and pay attention to the value of the Fano factor at the entrance
  • An increase in the Fano factor indicates an increased stability of the price movement
  • A decrease in the value of the Fano factor indicates a decrease in the strength of the price movement
  • Exit the trade when the Fano factor is at or above the FF value when entering
  • Traders who do not want to take risks can exit at the first decrease in FF from the peak value. Risk-averse traders can stay in the trade as long as FF is at or above the FF value at entry to capture more price movement.

The Fano Factor works best in combination with another price action-based indicator/trigger (e.g. works well with All-In-One SRES Channel; RSI Mirrors and Reflections; or Synapse’s Modified TTM Squeeze)
